Elementary schools are holding campus-specific GT Curriculum Nights during the months of September and October.
Please take a few minutes to glance at the

The Texas State Plan explains the state mandated services for GT students under the Texas Education Code. Like the
Texas accountability system, districts are evaluated on various measures to determine whether the GT program
is Acceptable, Recognized, or Exemplary. The following sections are especially pertinent. Note that these are
requirements of an Acceptable program, and that CISD's District Improvement Plan states that CISD is striving to be Recognized.
Section 2 - Program Design
School districts assure an array of learning opportunities that are commensurate with the abilities of gifted/talented students, and
that emphasize content in the four (4) core academic areas. Services are available during the school day as well as the entire school year. Parents are informed of these options.
The program options enable gifted/talented students to work together as a group, work with other students, and work independently
during the school day as well as the entire school year.
Section 3 - Curriculum and Instruction
School districts assure an array of appropriately challenging learning experiences for gifted/talented students in grades K through
12 that emphasize content in the four (4) core academic areas and shall inform parents of the opportunities.
A continuum of learning experiences is provided that leads to the development of advanced level products and/or performances.
Opportunities are provided to accelerate in areas of student strengths.
District and campus improvement plans include provisions to improve/modify services to gifted/talented students.
Be sure to ask your GT Specialist and/or principal how your campus is complying with these state mandates. As always, feel free to
contact your
CGA campus rep if you need another parent perspective.

It's time to join CGA - or renew your membership - for
2008-2009. The CGA membership year runs August to August, so even if you were a member last year, you’ll want to join again.
CGA members enjoy many benefits:
- Free admission to the CGA Speaker Series, which brings in respected experts in Gifted Education. Learn about research and practical tips for parenting gifted kids.
- Quarterly CGA newsletter emailed to you, in advance of public availability. Knowledge is power!
- Consult with CGA campus reps on how to navigate the options for gifted kids at your children's schools. We can all use an omsbudsman sometimes.
- Meet other parents who share similar concerns about raising gifted kids. Learn from others who have "been there, done that".
- Raise a collective voice with the CISD School Board. There is strength in numbers!
- Participate in programs offered by CGA for parents and students, like the Parent Discussion Group or MOSAIC summer enrichment programs, at discounted rates.
Join both CGA & TAGT
We encourage parents to join not just your local group, CGA, but also our state group, Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.
Why? First, we have realized that just supporting our teachers and administrators in CISD
is not enough; we also need TAGT lobbying at the state level for more stringent program requirements and audits of GT programs.
Secondly, TAGT is holding their annual conference in Dallas this November and we want to encourage you to attend.
Thirdly, by reading TAGT’s Tempo magazine and their emails, you can be better informed about gifted education.
Act now!
To join CGA, download the
membership form or
pay online.
Then tell your friends with gifted children to join, in case they aren't on our mailing list.
